Stanley Stellar
Stanley Stellar (b. 1945, Brooklyn, NY), is celebrated for his intimate observations of queer life. Documenting life on the street and in his studio in New York City, Stellar’s photographs acutely define the beauty, fear, and love of the LGBT community following the Stonewall riots of 1969 and through the Gay Liberation movement. Archiving the Christopher Street Piers in the West Village, the first Gay Pride Parades, couples facing the unfathomable realities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, or even New York’s Mr. Leather competition, Stellar’s lens has maintained its focus for five decades.
